36th Annual IDFA Capitol Hill Ice Cream Party, 4-6pm at El Union Square. You’re invited to IDFA’s Annual Capitol Hill Ice Cream Party, now in its 36th year of celebration. The party is eagerly anticipated every summer by members of Congress, their families and staff, and other special guests. The Hill’s “coolest” summertime tradition this year will dish up about 1500 gallons of ice cream and frozen yogurt, as well as 6,000 root beer floats. FREE

Festival Afro Bahia: Opening Reception & Awards, 6-9pm at Thurgood Marshall Center (1816 12th St NW). The Festival Afro Bahia is proud to present the screening of the documentary MOKAMBO Nguzo Malunda Bantu of Bahia “the tradition of the Bantu people” a film by Soraya Públio Mesquita. The documentary tells the history of the Bantu people brought from Africa to Brazil as a slaves and reveals the rich legacy inherited by the Brazilian people. The majority of the language spoken in Salvador of Bahia during that time was Bantu and they were responsible for the definitive difference in the Portuguese spoken in Brazil in relation to other Portuguese speaking countries.
