This month we have a wide range of events that are family-friendly, from science expos to free ferris wheel rides to kid-friendly volunteer opportunities.

5th USA Science & Engineering Festival Expo, 10am-4pm at Walter E. Washington Convention Center (801 Mt Vernon Pl NW). Explore 3,000 hands-on exhibits from the world’s leading scientific and engineering societies, universities, government agencies, high-tech corporations and STEM organizations. The two-day Expo is perfect for children, teens, and families who want to inspire their curious minds. FREE, Pre-Registration to the Expo IS REQUIRED

Pop-Up Museum: Your D.C. Stories 1968 – 2018, 12-4pm at Anacostia Neighborhood Library (1800 Good Hope Rd SE). A Pop-Up Museum is a one-day show created by you. Share your stories, save your family treasures and learn about D.C. happenings in 1968. Bring your yearbooks, church bulletins, posters, ticket stubs, family photos or other ephemera that highlights themes of art, activism, music, service and everyday life in D.C. FREE

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: Park View neighborhood cleanup, 11am-12:30pm(3506 Georgia Ave NW). The first 30 volunteers will receive a free yoga class from Yoga Heights! We’ll provide all the supplies you need — gloves, trash pickers, trash bags, etc. FREE
ChecklistDC: This is a great opportunity to volunteer without having to sign-up in advance or do any training. Just show up!

Petworth Bandstand, 1-5pm at Petworth Citizen (829 Upshur St NW). The biggest Bandstand yet! Four local bands playing for four hours. Cash donations and 10% of food & drink will be donated to a local charity. FREE

NSO In Your Neighborhood: Capitol Hill, 5pm at the Corner Store (900 South Carolina Ave SE). NSO Musicians perform in this arts center that showcases the work of actors, playwrights, musicians, filmmakers, artists, poets, and chefs. FREE

2018 Sakura Matsuri & Japanese Street Festival, 10:30am-6pm at Newseum (555 Pennsylvania Avenue NW). We are the largest one-day celebration of Japanese culture in the US. We have 4 stages of performances and demonstrations, cultural exhibitors, food vendors, cooking demonstrations, a Childrens’ Corner – and more! Children 12 and under are always free! $10

DC Emancipation Day Parade, 2-3pm (10th & Pennsylvania NW). Come walk with Mayor Bowser and members of the Bowser Administration at the 2018 Emancipation Day Parade and Concert. FREE

DC Emancipation Day Concert, 3pm (10th & Pennsylvania NW). Featuring Angie Stone, Rare Essence, Konshens The MC, DJ Dirty Rico, Luther Relives, and Drew Tillman. FREE

2018 March for Science, 8am-5pm at National Mall and Memorial Parks(900 Ohio Dr SW). We march for many reasons, but unite to defend science—because science belongs to us all. 

National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, 10am-12pm at Federal Triangle Metro Station (10th & Constitution Ave NW). Giant colorful helium balloons, elaborate floats, marching bands from across the country, celebrity entertainers, and performers burst down the Parade route. FREE

Anacostia River Festival, at Anacostia Park (Anacostia Drive & Good Hope Road SE). For a taste of local D.C., celebrate the Anacostia River and take a canoe out to explore the River, ride in our bike parade, play lawn games with your family and experience Southeast D.C.’s local arts scene at this special FREE event. FREE

NSO In Your Neighborhood: Woodley Park, 1pm and 3pm at Smithsonian’s National Zoo (3001 Connecticut Ave NW). Back-to-back family-friendly performances in the Smithsonian National Zoo’s newly renovated auditorium inside the Visitor’s Center. A Musical Instrument Petting Zoo with take place outdoors adjacent to the Visitor’s Center at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. FREE

Congress Heights 30th Anniversary, 12-2pm (2700 Martin Luther King Ave SE). The Ballou Knights of Ballou Senior High School present to you an eventful celebration.This will be open to the community and will contain entertainement such as bubble soccer , human chess and a game console station (PS4,Wii U,Xbox 1). Also we will display food dishes from local vendors that will be serving samples. All activities are FREE!

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: The Great CoHi Cleanup, 1-3pm (1450 Girard St NW). Register to participate in The Great CoHi Cleanup and join friends, family, and neighbors to beautify our community, and one of DC’s most popular, eclectic neighborhoods. FREE

The More The Merrior: An Oyster Shuck, 3-10pm at Big Bear Cafe (1700 1st St NW). A ticket gets you a wristband. And with that wristband, you can eat to your heart’s content. Grilled, raw and fried Chesapeake oysters, oyster stew, Meats and Foods sausage and homemade kraut, grilled local veggies, catfish dip, Korean BBQ, banchan and more. Kids get in free before 4pm. $50

Frühlingsfest: a Spring Garden Festival, 12-4pm at Heurich House Museum (1307 New Hampshire Ave NW). The Heurich House Museum presents Frühlingsfest, a seasonal celebration modeled after a traditional German Festival. Spend the day in our Castle Garden (one of the only open spaces of its kind in Dupont Circle) enjoying maibock, eating delicious bbq, expressing yourself with art, and playing games. We’ve invited some of our favorite local artisans and businesses to join us. $15

Ward 4 Bike Ride, 10:30am-12:30pm at Petworth (9th and Upshur St NW). Celebrate #EarthDay at the Annual Ward 4 Bike Ride with Councilmember Todd, Rachel Maisler (Ward 4 Representative to the D.C. Bicycle Advisory Council), and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA). The approximately 8-mile loop will begin and end at the Upshur St & 9th St, NW bikeshare station, and will feature bicycle infrastructure and sites of significance in Ward 4. FREE

ACM 50th Anniversary Program: Block Watch Opening Reception, 12-2pm at Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum (1901 Fort Place SE). The public is invited to embed their own words and images related to their personal experiences of the community into the work’s three dimensional, collaged layers of drawings to create a tapestry of voices in vignettes throughout the bold, broad structural lines of the piece. FREE

Free Spring Bombazo, 12-3pm at Espaço Cultural Samba Trovão – Brazilian Culture, Music and Capoeira Angola (4318 Hamilton St., Hyattsville, Maryland 20781). Come and join us to welcome the spring to the sounds of Bomba de Puerto Rico! Drumming, singing and dancing. This a free community event and part of the 1 year celebration of Espaço Cultural Samba Trovão. All ages are welcome. FREE
